Salt & Blood Pressure Myth

Updated: Jul 6

For years, doctors have told people with high blood pressure to avoid salt. But this terrible advice is actually making things worse. They will tell you "Avoid sodium!". Labels of food products will warn you that certain foods are high in sodium. Even with all of these precautions and pharmaceutical drugs, and 'medical advancements', why is half of the US population still suffering from High Blood pressure?  The problem isn't really salt, it's the stress on our arteries that have made them stiff. Avoiding salt can make people more nervous, which will actually raise blood pressure even more.

Let's make one things VERY clear: Sodium is not salt. Sodium is a mineral and is HIGHLY important for all 30 trillion cells in the body. The problem isn't really salt, it is the artery walls that have lost their flexibility that is the problem. Why this happens will be discussed further at a later date. But, avoiding salt can make people more nervous, which will actually raise blood pressure even more.

A key point is how high blood pressure and thyroid problems are connected. When people stop using salt, especially salt with added iodine, they don't get enough iodine in most cases. This iodine is really important for the thyroid, which controls many things in our body. Without enough iodine, people can get more anxious and tense, which also raises blood pressure.

The answer isn't to stop eating salt altogether, but to use the right kind. The best salt has a balance of sodium, chloride, and iodine. This helps the body make the iodine it needs. So, instead of cutting out salt, use salt with iodine when you cook. This can help keep your emotions steady and control your blood pressure better.
