So...lets talk about it. Alopecia (fancy name for hair loss) is something that many people suffer from and is a major blow to our confidence in our appearance. We consequently go to drastic methods to either cover it up or cure it (Yes, it's more than possible) and many times this makes the situation worse. I myself suffered from hair loss as a child when I was in a car accident at the age of 9 and suffered severe trauma to my head.
This is a brief article on topics, some of which are much deeper and will be touched on more in later posts. The aim here is to deliver digestible information, leave out the fluff, so you can get back to your life and add the quality that you deserve to it.
So Lets Go!!!
First we must understand the main culprit at play that is much less obvious. And that is , Dihydrotestosterone also called DHT (Don't let the lingo scare you. I promise, I got you! ) DHT is a degraded form of Testosterone (an androgen=male hormone). Men and women both have Testosterone. Women have less of it than men. The problem is, when testosterone is metabolized(used up/broken down) your liver is supposed to dispose of it usually through urination.

This process is being interrupted and the Testosterone is being converted to DHT by an enzyme called 5 Alpha Reductase. Another enzyme called Aromatase also interrupts this process and converts Testosterone to Estradiol which is also a problem. (More on this later) We are told that Aromatase and DHT are more potent (because it effects the body with much less of it present in your body) and thus beneficial forms of hormones. This is completely false. Most of the information online, as it relates to health, is inaccurate and even intentionally false. #googleisnotyourfriend
1. Excessive Onanism (Masturbation)
Yeah....this is that conversation that's hardly had. But because it's never talked about, it remains a consistent problem. It's something pretty much everyone has done at some point and many still are doing. If you do this excessively, I just want you to think to yourself and see if any of these side effects you can relate to:
Nervousness
Anxiety
Impatience
Forgetfulness
Brain Fog
When masturbation is done excessively it actually disrupts brain and Endocrine (glands secreting hormones) processes that make it harder for you to deal with situations that will bring about the above reactions. When this occurs what is the result? Stress.
2. Stress: Psychological and Physical
This ties into the previous cause. Since we are all aware of stress on a psychologically (mental and emotional) level we will go straight into physical stress. First, what must be understood is that stress increases your levels of Aromatase and 5 Alpha Reductase which we now know is going to increase your DHT and Estradiol levels.
Now, take a look at the picture in the center above. Notice how these women (although beautiful) have very narrow hips. This is called Android Pelvis (Andro=man) thus means "man-like pelvis". As far as it relates to women especially, her body isn't designed to endure extreme physical activity and this causes her testosterone to convert to DHT in excess and her hips become like a man's. About a 4th of women who perform on an Olympian level don't even ovulate
.... Something to think about. As for men, this is also the case. Excessive weight lifting or cardio will do the same.
3. Steroids
YES! Steroids will increase your DHT levels. This is from injection steroids and even oral medications like Prednisone. Because steroids mimic hormones and functions that are carried out by the adrenal glands (such as metabolism and stress) your DHT will increase. Women who also take steroids will also notice they develop Hirsutism (excessive hair on body, mustache, and beard)
4. Trauma
Okay, I know. This one is more obvious but I wanted to include this one so you can understand exactly what is happening and WHY it's curable. So trauma comes in many forms to the area affected by Alopecia. Some of them are: Hair products with harsh chemicals, Hairstyles that are too tight (traction alopecia) or injury to the area of hair loss. As stated at the beginning of the article, I suffered with this for years after a car accident I was in at the age of 9 years old. When we are under stress or experience something traumatic our blood vessels constrict (become narrow). Your hair follicles do the exact same thing in response to DHT and Trauma.

In the picture above, notice how the hair follicle is getting smaller and smaller. In cases where DHT is not the issue, there is Trauma present. This must be reversed
One thing you may have realized by now is that all 4 of these causes in one way or another all involved stress in some form or another. Stress is a topic that deserves much more attention and details that will be further discussed at a later date. Your diet also plays a significant role as well, but I promised the keep this post brief and easy to follow, and I hope I was able to do just that. #healthsimplified
